Uganda has embarked on a significant initiative to foster sustainable growth and green industrialization through the development of a circular economy. This milestone represents a proactive step toward realizing the country's Vision 2040. Through strategic collaboration with ACEA and backed by the African Development Bank's Facility for Circular Economy (ACEF), Uganda is paving the way for sustainable socio-economic development, setting a benchmark for others to follow.

On January 31, 2024, the official launch of Uganda's circular economy roadmap took center stage in Kampala, offering a strategic approach to integrate circular economy principles into the nation's socio-economic fabric.

This initiative is implemented within the ACEF’s National Circular Economy Roadmaps project with the African Circular Economy Alliance (ACEA). The two entities pull together their respective expertise and resources to fast-track Africa’s transition effectively to a circular economy.

Realizing the potential of a circular economy requires the collective effort of multiple stakeholders. The Ugandan initiative will involve government policymakers, the private sector, and civil society organizations, ensuring that the roadmap reflects a comprehensive and inclusive approach to sustainable development.

Adopting circular economy can unlock numerous benefits, including increased efficiency, reduced waste, and greater economic resilience. For Uganda, this shift is expected to accelerate progress toward its sustainable development goals and enhance its response to climate change.
